If your gums bleed when you brush, feel tender, or have started to pull away from your teeth, it may be time for more than a routine cleaning. At For You Dental, Dr. Ashlea Drakeford and our hygiene team provide scaling and root planing in Carrollton, TX — a thorough deep cleaning that removes the plaque and tartar hiding below your gumline so your gums can heal.
Gum disease is far more common than most people realize. According to the CDC, about 42% of U.S. adults age 30 and older have periodontitis, and it is a leading cause of tooth loss. The good news: when it’s caught early, a deep cleaning can stop it in its tracks.
Our office welcomes patients from Carrollton, Addison, Farmers Branch, and North Dallas. Call (972) 391-8792 or book online to schedule your periodontal evaluation.
What Is Scaling and Root Planing?
Scaling and root planing (often called SRP or a “deep cleaning”) is a non-surgical periodontal treatment for gum disease. It cleans the parts of your teeth that a regular cleaning can’t reach: the root surfaces inside the pockets that form between your teeth and gums.
When plaque isn’t fully removed, it hardens into tartar (calculus). Tartar and bacteria irritate the gums, which pull away from the teeth and create periodontal pockets. Healthy gums measure about 1–3 mm; pockets of 4 mm or deeper usually mean gum disease has set in. Brushing and flossing can’t reach that deep, so the bacteria keep damaging the gum tissue and the bone that holds your teeth in place.
Scaling and root planing works in two parts:
- Scaling removes plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces above and below the gumline, all the way to the bottom of each pocket.
- Root planing smooths the root surfaces so bacteria have a harder time sticking and your gums can reattach more snugly to the teeth.
Signs You May Need a Deep Cleaning
Gum disease is often painless in its early stages, which is why many Carrollton patients don’t know they have it. Schedule an evaluation if you notice any of these:
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Red, swollen, or tender gums
- Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth
- Gums that are receding or teeth that look longer
- Loose teeth or a change in how your bite fits together
- Pus between your teeth and gums
- Heavy tartar buildup, or it’s been a few years since your last cleaning
Your risk is higher if you smoke or vape, have diabetes, are pregnant, take medications that cause dry mouth, or have a family history of gum disease.
What to Expect During Scaling and Root Planing in Carrollton
Step 1: Periodontal Exam and Pocket Measurements
We start with a full periodontal exam. Your hygienist gently measures the depth of the pocket around each tooth with a small probe, checks for bleeding and recession, and takes digital X-rays to look at the bone levels. Then Dr. Drakeford walks you through what we found and whether a deep cleaning is right for you.
Step 2: Numbing for Comfort
We numb the area being treated with local anesthetic, so most patients feel pressure and vibration rather than pain. If you feel anxious about dental visits, ask about our sedation dentistry options.
Step 3: Scaling Above and Below the Gumline
Using an ultrasonic scaler and fine hand instruments, we remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from each tooth, working down to the bottom of every pocket.
Step 4: Root Planing
Next, we smooth the exposed root surfaces. This removes rough spots where bacteria collect and gives your gums a clean surface to heal against. In some cases, we may place a local antibiotic in deeper pockets to help control infection.
Step 5: Follow-Up and Re-Evauluation
About 4–6 weeks later, we re-measure your pockets to see how your gums have healed. Most patients then move into a periodontal maintenance schedule. If some pockets stay deep, we’ll talk through next steps, which may include a referral to a periodontist.
